About Me

My Background

I am a woman of Afro-Caribbean descent born and raised in South Florida by two wonderful Jamaican parents. Beginning in undergrad, I had an interest in human osteology and the ways it could be used to understand human health and experience. I was afforded the opportunity to serve as an intern in 2015 at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, and I have been in love with anthropology since. I am currently a PhD candidate at the University of Florida. I am a recipient of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, as well as the NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant (#2041182). When I'm not working, I love making artwork, baking, and playing video games.

Areas of Experience

  • African Diaspora migration history
  • Human osteology
  • Text analysis of archival data
  • Applications of critical theories of race to diaspora studies and burial practices

My Ethical Approach

  • I welcome consultation and feedback from community stakeholders at my research sites, and I strive to make my work both transparent and accessible. I also seek to provide substantive community benefits at my research sites, including but not limited to curricula and virtual tool development, student mentorship, and historic preservation and/or reconstruction.
  • As my work directly intersects with ongoing dialogues concerning the ethical treatment of human remains, I do not take the stewardship of human remains lightly. I seek community support before endeavoring to study historic burials, and I restrict my work with human remains to provenienced groups that have potential or realized advocates. Lastly, wherever possible, I work with community stakeholders to advocate for culturally-defined, transparent reburial processes.
